Okahashi Jisuke (岡橋治助)

Jisuke OKAHASHI (January 21, 1826 – November 2, 1913) was a Japanese businessman. He was a todori (chief) of the Sanjushi Bank and was a president of Tenma Boseki. He was born in Toichi-gun, Yamato Province (present Tawaramoto-cho, Nara Prefecture). His childhood name was Tomekichi. He changed his name to Kiyozaemon later.

In 1842, he came to Osaka and became a trainee at Shimaya dealing with futomono (cotton cloth and hemp cloth) and in 1856, he had a shop of Jisuke ABURAYA which was a branch family of Shimaya and started as a cotton merchant and became one of the best cotton warehouse merchant in Osaka. In 1878, he established the Thirty-fourth Shikoku National Bank (The former Sanwa Bank) and assumed Todori (chief). On the other hand, he was related to Wakayama Yonjyu san Bank, Nippon Kyodo Bank, Churitsu Chochiku Bank, Nihon Churitsu Bank. Moreover, he participated in the planning of about 30 businesses or more such as railways of Kanan, Osaka Prefecture, Nippon Life Insurance Company, Nippon Fire Insurance Company, Nippon Warehouse, and Teikoku Bussan. In 1887, he established Tennma Boseki and became a president and trailblazer in the world of Osaka cotton spinning industry serving a development and growth of Nippon Menka, Nippon Boseki. He was a special councilor of Osaka Chamber of Commerce. He retired in 1908 and changed his name to Kiyozaemon.
